What Happened in July?
Construction update from President: Render Reveal
Our dreams are coming true! I am happy to share with our community some renderings of The San Carlos Pickleball Club! Our dreams are no longer just in our minds, they are real! It is hard to not get emotional about our accomplishments and what has yet to be accomplished. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making the magic happen; our Board, the Management Team, so many volunteers, our generous members, the Community of San Carlos and the businesses that knew that dreams are possible if we work together.
I look forward to seeing many of you this summer playing at night under the lights and the rest of you this season! We will keep sharing our progress so you can be excited and ready to come back to your HOME COURTS!
Carlos Dessens, President, San Carlos Pickleball Club
Summer Camp
43 kids from the Castaway Kids (Mexican non-profit) and the La Manga community had the opportunity to join our Pickleball Summer Camp! This was posible with donations from our amazing San Carlos Pickleball Community!
There is no doubt that together we can do great things for our community and we are proud that our club members are very generous! A warm thank you to everyone who made the summer camp a success for the kids: the coaches, the club members who sponsored the kids’ participation, volunteers, Lisa (From Sunset Grill) and Tom (from Marvida) that provided us with a Van to move the kids from La Manga to our courts every week.
Haboob
There was more action than usual at the courts when the haboob hit us in the middle of a summer camp session! We got to experience our beautiful team spirit in action when club members helped pack up the courts, provided a safe place for the kids, and cleaned up the courts the following day. Thank you for your help everyone!

Sunset Weekly Round Robins
In the evening on Tuesdays (advanced level) and Wednesdays (intermediate level) we have been organizing our weekly ranking round robins. Our unique San Carlos Pickleball Ranking Round Robin gives you the most intensely competitive individual event both mentally and physically. You will test your skills against players of similar skill and have the ability to advance based on your performance. You will play 2-3 rounds of three or four games each round. It will test your endurance and at the end you will be ranked based on average finishing position.
All of this while enjoying the sun setting over Tetakawi and playing under the lights in beautiful San Carlos! Hurry to sign up in our RR WhatsApp group with Darren Thompson +52 6221651762.
Round Robin Star of July
Congratulations to Ricardo Barron who made the biggest improvement in the club’s ranking this month, jumping an incredible 48 ranks in one week!

What’s Going On!
More Court Lights
We are fortunate in that even during our “slow season” our available courts are typically at capacity. Due to budgetary restraints, we initially lit up only four courts. That has proven to not be sufficient and the community not only took notice but took action.
Kicked off by Terry & Angie Parmely, and quickly matched by Ace & Amber Bollinger, Mike Haynes, Antonio & Barb Curiel, Kevin & Choclo Duff and our President Carlos Dessens & First Lady Tammi Miller the club received $8,500 in donations towards lights in a SINGLE DAY and is 50% of the TOTAL needed to light every single court!
Additionally, thank you to Karen Stewart & Ron Halverson, Kelly & Scott Buntenbah, and First Step Home Group, for their contributions and support which significantly lowered the price of materials and installation.
A major thank you to all of our lighting donors!
We are half way, we are asking our generous community to help chip in to finish the installation of the 14 courts. If you’d like to claim a charitable donation on your US taxes you can send your donation via check or Zelle to the San Carlos Pickleball Association, an approved 501c3 in the United States.
Contact Ryan K. at sancarlosryan@gmail.com for more information. No donation is too small! It takes a village!

What are you working on improving for your game right now?
I am actively working on placing my shots and serves with intention. This means dinks, drives, and blocks. It is always a work in progress because I am also trying to improve my accuracy.
How do you prepare for a game?
Being a retired Health Coach, I take preparation very seriously. I drink 120 oz (or more) of water each day, not including what I bring to the courts.
I eat whole food complex carbohydrates and varied protein to fuel my energy and muscles, and I heavily stretch before and after every game. Preparation for every game is the key to remaining healthy during and after the game, plus reduce the chance of injury.
What hack has been most helpful for your game?
Honestly I do not use a “hack,” but I do use meditation and mantras to get me through the games. I try to meditate on my shots before every game to mentally prepare for what I will face. During a mistake or missed shot, I instantly relive the shot and correctly go through the motion to help set the muscle memory physically. I tell myself “Breathe, Slow and Steady, and Focus.” This helps me stay in the moment and actively work on what I need to improve on.
Pro-shop
Finally we have a Pickleball Pro-shop in San Carlos. Be part of our thriving pickleball family wearing your Club t-shirt or hat.
We are located inside First Step Home Concept Store in Seaside Plaza.
See you on the court!
Fitness Hack: Electrolytes
Hydration is critical to optimize performance when playing pickleball, especially during the hot summer months when we sweat more. We asked our club member Alexia Bjarkan, health coach with clinical experience, how to best hydrate to ace your game!
“I recommend taking electrolytes, but watch out for unhealthy ingredients”, Alexia says. “I use a package of LMNT, a high-quality electrolyte, for each session on the courts. I also start every morning by drinking a glass of water mixed with a teaspoon of Solspring salt. Himalayan salt can work too, although the quality can vary.”
We continue to build the greatest pickleball community in Latin America, and thank you for your contributions to making it happen!
