Mirador Court members are invited to our hip-hoppin’ Easter pickleball Round Robin tournament on Sunday, April 1. Play starts at 8:30am. The morning will be full of surprises, followed by some breakfast treats and drinks. Franklin X-40 pickleballs provided by Club at Mirador Courts

Sue Fehrle contacted the sales rep at Franklin Sports, explaining that the Franklin X-40 pickleballs purchased by the Club and sold to players were breaking quite quickly. Franklin Sports said that their ball manufacturing had some issues, but that they have made changes which should improve the performance of the balls.

They have sent us 200 complimentary balls to compensate for the balls we had ordered.

We are happy to announce that the Pickleball Association will now provide Franklin X-40 balls to be used at Mirador Courts, and will continue to do so while these balls are available. These balls are marked CLUB. Feel free to use them for your games and then return them to the ball holders (pictured). If your CLUB ball breaks, please put it in the green marked bin. We are keeping track of the balls and breakage, so please do nottake these broken balls from the bin. Thank you.

Drills with Deb: Wednesday, March 21 at 7:15am

Intermediate / Advanced Drills with Deb will take place on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:15am for Mirador Court members.

We’ll go to 8:00am and then Open Play starts after that.

This will be the final Drills with Deb for the season.

Ball Machine Clinics with T: Thursday, March 22

T (Theresa) is going to run two 1-hour clinics on Thursday, March 22, using the ball machine. Each clinic is limited to 4 players in order to maximize your practice time.

The ball machine is an invaluable tool allowing players to practice certain shots to improve consistency. These clinics are for high-beginner/intermediate/advanced players, as the pace of the balls shooting out of the machine is quite fast, and isn’t suitable or controllable for a brand new player.

Clinic times are:
A) 10:00am – 11:00am
B) 11:00am – 12:00pm

If you are interested in attending a clinic, please contact T by email at theresamelius23@gmail.com and indicate your preference for clinic A or B. T will confirm your spot before the clinic.

Depending on the popularity of these clinics, T will hold more over the next few Thursdays, so stay tuned for details.

Weekend Play: Sunday Round Robins

Round Robin play continues on Sundays, starting at 8:00am, for all Mirador Court members. We play for 12 minutes and then rotate players and courts.

It’s a great way to meet and play with new people, without worrying about your scores.

The King & Queen of the Courts on Saturdays will stop for now.

Paddles for sale

We have new Paddletek pickleball paddles for sale. You do not pay any taxes or shipping fees.

The following are available:

Club: $50 USD or 1000 pesos.
Phoenix Lite: $59 USD or 1180 pesos.
Element: $75 USD or 1500 pesos.

San Carlos was well represented over the past few weeks at various pickleball tournaments in the US, bringing home lots of hardware. Congratulations to all competitors and a special thanks to our super fans! Many NOB players are excited to join our international Sombrero Showdown tournament next year, which will run from February 7 – 11, 2019.

Kings & Queens of the Court: Saturday, January 27

Hi All of you Kings and Queens of the court. Do you want to work on your competitive Pickleball skills? Kings and Queens of the Court is a competitive game that will take the place of our ladder league. It will offer you a competitive outlet without the need for scheduling.

It will be held on Saturdays from 8:00am – 10:00am for advanced players (3.5 and above) and 10:00am – 12:00pm for intermediate & beginner players (below 3.5). Each time slot will be open for the first 24 players to sign up. If we have more than 48 players interested we can open up more time slots.

Drills with Deb starting again this week

Intermediate / Advanced Drills with Deb are starting again this Wednesday, January 24 for Mirador Court members.

Because it is a little cold and dark in the mornings, we’ll start at 7:30am and go until 8:15am. Open Play starts after that.

Drills with Deb will be held on the following Wednesdays: January 24, January 31, and February 15.

Volunteers Needed

We are in need of Volunteers for the upcoming Sombrero Showdown and Amigos Cup tournament. There’ll be 148 players — 70 coming from San Carlos for the first time, so we want to put our best foot forward.

If you have time to help, even for a few hours on one of the days, then WE NEED YOU!

Some specific duties include: 
Parking helpers – all days
PA announcers – all days
Photographer – all days
Awards Presenter – all days
Facilities checker on Friday

Event Schedule:
Set-up will be on Wednesday, February 7
Open Play is Thursday, February 8
Men’s Doubles is Friday, February 9
Mixed Doubles is Saturday, February 10
Women’s Doubles is Sunday, February 11
Amigos Cup is Monday, February 12

There are also some pre-tournament set-up duties that we need filled, so if you can help us before the event, please let us know.

LINE JUDGES NEEDED: If you can see the white line, you can be a line judge! For the medal matches each day, we need line judges. Let us know if you are able to help. You’ll be provided with Line Judge training before the tournament.

REFEREES NEEDED ON SATURDAY: We are still in need of referees, specifically on Saturday as this is the day that most of the volunteer refs are also playing. If you are not playing in the tournament and can help, we will train you on how to be a great referee.

Pre-Tourney Orientation: Monday, February 5

For all players participating in the upcoming Sombrero Showdown and Amigos Cup who have not played in a tournament before, this orientation is for you!

We’ll cover what you need to know so that when your name is called on Game Day, you’ll be ready to play. This includes the new USAPA rules (especially the 2018 changes), wristbands, warm-ups, court processes and etiquette, what referees are looking at, line judges, and more.

The orientation will be on Monday, February 5 at 10:30am at Mirador Courts.

New Rules

On January 31, 2018 changes to the USAPA \ IFP Official Tournament Rulebook will come into effect. You can find the full rule book on the USAPA website here and here’s a summary of the major changes.

A couple important ones for tournament play, are:

4.A.1. The entire score must be called before the server begins his or her service motion.

4.A.2. The service motion begins with the server’s arm movement initiating the swing, backward or forward, to contact the ball.

4.A.9. If the serve clears the net or hits the net and then touches the receiver or the receiver’s partner, it is a point for the serving team.

4.B.9. Prior to the start of the service motion, to determine the correct receiver and his or her position, the receiving team may ask the referee to confirm the score. Players may not ask if they are in the correct position.

4.C.2. Once the score has been called, the receiver cannot become “not ready” unless there is a valid hinder.

4.E. The 10-Second Rule. Once the referee determines the receiver is in position and ready or should be in position and ready and the score has been called, the server is allowed 10 seconds to serve the ball.

4.E.1. If the server exceeds 10 seconds to serve, a fault will be declared.

Skills and Drills Clinic with James Main: Tuesday, February 13

James Main, a 5.0 player from Colorado, is coming to San Carlos for the Sombrero Showdown tournament. After the tournament, he is offering a Skills and Drills Clinic for beginner and intermediate players. You’ll work on techniques and strategies to improve your level of play. James competes in regional and National tournaments in the US and abroad, and also teaches pickleball and is the owner of Pickleball Vacation Adventures that takes people to exotic locations to learn and play. The clinic runs from 9:00am – noon, on Tuesday, February 13 and is limited to the first 16 players who sign up. You must be a Mirador Courts member to participate.

Water!

Another perk of playing at Mirador Courts … we now have water at the courts. Stay hydrated.

The water delivery truck comes weekly to refill the 5 gallon jugs. If you see that a jug is empty, go into the shed. There is a plastic bag in a bin with replacement water stickers and tape. Take out a sticker and tape it to the empty jug. Place the empty jug at the end of the walkway outside of the courts.

If you see that the jug has been replaced and is now full, kindly bring it back into the courts. It will be an effective and efficient process if we all manage it together.

Lost & Found

The Lost & Found box at the courts is full.

Please check it if you’re missing clothing, a water bottle, etc.

In general before you leave the courts each day, have a look around to make sure you have all that you brought. With the cooler weather in the mornings, we are usually wearing layers and inevitably, this is what is left behind….hoodies, jackets, etc.

For Smokers and Dog owners

To all our members, and specifically for those who smoke or bring their dogs to the courts — we have recently landscaped the front and north side of Mirador Courts. Let’s keep all areas around the courts clean now.

Please DO NOT smoke near the courts, and DO NOT leave your cigarette butts on the ground in this area anymore.

If you must smoke, then kindly do it across the street and bring something to put your butts in and bring them home again with you.

And also, as a courtesy to all members of this facility, pick up after your pets and discard of the trash. There is a green PASA bin at the far north-west side of the community complex where you can throw away dog poop. Thank you.

Paddles and Balls for sale

We have new Paddletek Club paddles for sale. This paddle is for people who are looking for a polymer core paddle at an entry-level price. The Paddletek Club is a medium weight paddle. It comes in 3 colors (red, blue, yellow).

We have sold all the Franklin X balls. However Karen Stewart has DuroFast balls for sale at her Seaside Realty office. 3 balls for 100 pesos. You can contact Karen at stewmex@gmail.com or just come into the office to purchase them. Please bring exact change.

Learn to be a Referee

Are you interested in learning how to ref pickleball games?

We’ll be offering lessons on Thursday, December 14 at 1:00pm at Mirador Courts. For those who came last Thursday, this is Part 2 of the training. For those who are coming for the first time, you’ll get caught up quickly.

Even if you’re not sure if you’d ever want to ref a game, give it a try … it will help you learn more about the rules of the game. If you’re injured and can’t currently play, this is a great way to stay in the game.

Mirador Courts — Let’s Play Pickleball!

Sun & Fun Round Robin – 2 spaces left

On Friday, December 8, 48 people will be playing in the Sun & Fun Round Robin pickleball tournament at Mirador Courts.

This will be a fun event in the warm sunshine of San Carlos – what a great way to avoid winter!

This tournament is a Round Robin format. A “Round Robin” is a structured form of play designed so that all players are playing against people of roughly equal ability. In each Round Robin, you will play six games to a score of 15, each with a different partner and against a different pair of opponents. In most cases, teams will be mixed (men and women).

There are only 2 spaces left, so if you would like to play, please email Theresa Melius asap at theresamelius23@gmail.com. Your space will be confirmed by December 4.

On the day of the tournament, meet at 7:45am at Mirador Courts for Check-in. Play will start at 8:00am. Plan on about 3.5 hours of play.

Mirador Courts — Let’s Play Pickleball!

Pickleball play at the new Mirador Courts is in full swing as the part-timers are heading back into town, and heading over to see and play at the new 6-court facility. As a reminder, you can buy your Annual Membership at Seaside Realty for 1500 pesos for the year (expires on September 30, 2018). Click herefor all the benefits included with your membership. And don’t forget to bring your membership card to Bonifacio’s restaurant where you will receive a 10% discount on your food and drinks.

Have a guest visiting and they want to play too? No problem – we have Day Passes available for 100 pesos per day, which can also be purchased at Seaside Realty.

As of November 10, there are 88 Annual Members, and 29 players have made use of the Day Passes.

Lessons/Clinics and Drills for Mirador Court Members

Beginner Lessons starting in November:

New to the sport or want to learn it? Then come out to our Beginner Lessons. If you don’t have a paddle, we will lend one to you. We’re offering lessons during the day and in the evenings.

Day-time lessons will take place on Tuesdays at Mirador Courts at 10:30am. Please contact T (Theresa) Melius at theresamelius23@gmail.com if you would like to take part in the lessons. Both T and Michele Monlux will be giving lessons/clinics to Beginners.

Evening lessons will take place on Tuesdays at Karen Stewart’s private court at 6:00pm. Please email stewmex@gmail.com if you would like to join an evening lesson.

Times and days may change at a later date, depending on instructor and player preferences and needs.

Intermediate / Advanced Drills with Deb:

On Wednesday mornings at 7:15am, intermediate and advanced players are invited to come to the courts and do Drills with Deb. Deb Forrester is a 4.5 USAPA ranked player with tons of pickleball experience and insight into the game. She and some of the other advanced San Carlos players will help you to improve your game by focusing on improving your skills. Open Play will follow the Drills.

Open Play

Open Play reserved times are booked for Mirador Court members to drop-in for social play. Open Play is scheduled Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 6am to 11am.There are 2 courts for Beginners, 2 courts for Intermediate and 2 courts for Advanced (3.5+ and above).

Open play is a great way to meet new friends and hone your skills. You don’t need to gather a group of friends to go play, you can just show up by yourself and get in on a game. Arrive and leave at any time during Open Play.

When you arrive at the courts, put your membership card or day pass in the court line-up system for either the Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced courts so you can get on a court and PLAY!

You can also check the calendar or court reservation system for Open Play days and times.

Ladder League

The Pickleball Ladder League is a fun way to meet and play with each other. The league is open to all members of Mirador Courts. There is no cost to play. At this time, the Ladder league will be mixed (men and women). As more players return to San Carlos, we may offer additional leagues (i.e. women’s, singles).

If possible, ladder games will be played on Thursdays at Mirador Courts. There will be a morning time slot starting at 8am and an afternoon time slot starting at 4pm. All games will be played during those times on Thursdays, unless you cannot play on Thursdays — and then just book your 4-some on a different day. If you want to play in the Ladder, please contact Darren Thompson at dgt74@yahoo.com or call 622-116-1838.

Rules:

• Each week, players will be placed in groups of 4 in the order of their ranking on the ladder for match play. The 4 players play 3 doubles games to 15 in a round robin fashion with the other three players of the foursome. Win by 1.
• Total possible points by each player each week is 45.
• Please send the score sheet to Darren asap and by Monday afternoon at the latest. Click here for the score sheet.
• Your ranking on a ladder is based upon your winning percentage (the ratio of points won to total points possible). Players will move up or down the ladder based upon their winning percentage.

Once the schedule is sent out for the week, each 4-some will need to contact each other to determine the time of the match. The first person on the list of your grouping is responsible for contacting the other 3 players to decide on the time slot. Everyone’s preference for communication is different…some of us use email, others prefer phone, or WhatsApp, or Facebook messenger. Please be patient and do your best to contact the other members of your group by trying a few of these mediums.

There will be 1 ladder match per person per week. You don’t have to be here every week to play.

If you cannot play on a specific week, please let Darren know BEFORE Monday morning of that week, as the schedule will go out each Monday.

Sunday Round Robins

Ask the Ref

True or False? If you ask your opponents’ opinion about whether a ball was “in” or “out”, you do not have to accept that opinion.

The Answer is…..False

According to Rule 6.D.5 of the official USAPA/IFP Tournament Handbook, it states that: No player should question an opponent’s call unless asked (except that any player may appeal a call to the referee in an officiated match). A player should ask the opponent’s opinion if the opponent was in a better position to see the call. An opponent’s opinion, if requested, shall be accepted. The opinion of a player looking down the line is more likely to be accurate than one looking across the line. Sun & Fun Round Robin – Register NOW

Sombrero Showdown – Register NOW

From Thursday, February 8 to Monday, February 12, 2018, we will host the Sombrero Showdown and Amigos Cup Tournament (formerly the Dink ‘n Sea tournament).

Pre-register now, to save your space. This tournament is for levels 3 and above, and for players over 30. Even if you don’t yet have a partner, get your name on the list and we can help you to find one that is similar in age and skill level. Email Sue at suefehrle@gmail.com if you would like to play, and she will get you pre-registered. This tournament is open to ALL pickleball players. You do not need to be a member of Mirador Courts to play in this tournament.

Note that in this tournament, you will play in the age bracket of the youngest player (i.e. if I am 52 and my partner is 35, we will play in the 30-49 year old age bracket).

And, you will play in the skill level of the higher-skilled player (i.e. if I am a 3.0 level player and my partner is 3.5, we will play in the 3.5 level division).

The dates and age brackets are as follows:
Friday, February 9, 2018: MEN’S DOUBLES  (Ages 30-49, 50-59, 60+, 65+, 70+, 75+, 80+)
Saturday, February 10, 2018: MIXED DOUBLES (Ages 30-49, 50-59, 60+, 65+, 70+, 75+, 80+)
Sunday, February 11, 2018: WOMEN’S DOUBLES (Ages 30-49, 50-59, 60+, 65+, 70+, 75+, 80+)
Monday, February 12, 2018: AMIGOS CUP (all players), San Carlos vs The World

The cost is $45 USD to play in all events. Payment is due by the end of December so that we can purchase the t-shirts, medals, etc.

Scott will run a 3-day Intermediate and Advanced level player Boot Camp from January 8 – 10, 2018. There were 20 spots available, for players at 3.5 – 5.0 level. There are only a couple spots left.

Cost: $395 USD per person (Welcome dinner, and 1 working lunch included). You will also either need to be a member of Mirador Courts or purchase a day pass for each day of the boot camp.

Goal: Step up your game with intensive, semi-private training for 5 – 6 hours per day, focusing on every aspect of the game, guaranteed to improve your strategy, technique and understanding of the game with IPTPA certified instructor, Scott Moore. Together with a small group of other players, you will improve your mental game, shot making, shot selection, and learn new strategies and ways to become a better pickleball player, while implementing our 10 key principles of the game.

The courts are built to USAPA specifications: each court is 30 feet wide by 60 feet long, with 5 feet on either side and 8 feet on either end.

Mirador Courts Open House, August 25

On Friday, August 25, Mirador Courts will be ready to play pickleball on!

To let everybody check them out and play some pickleball, the San Carlos Pickleball Association is having an Open House at 5:30pm. We’re all encouraged to play our ladder games then and there (ladder schedule). Please bring your own chair and bug spray.

The 6 fantastic new courts will hold all of us die-hards at once.

The Summer Ladder League ends after next week’s game (i.e., you’ll have a game this Friday and 1 more next week). In October, we’ll organize a new ladder league for Mirador Court members. It will be one of the many perks of being a member. There will be men’s, women’s and mixed ladders.

Starting Saturday, August 26, the courts will be available to members. Starting Monday, August 28, there will be Open Play from 6am to 11am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with 2 courts for Beginners, 2 courts for Intermediate and 2 courts for Advanced players.

Open Play is for Mirador Court members to drop-in for social play. It’s a great way to meet new friends and hone your skills. Paddles for Sale

The San Carlos Pickleball Association has arranged to have new paddles for sale through Paddletek.

Karen Stewart has volunteered to oversee the sales of the paddles. We have several designs at various prices available. If you’re ready for a new paddle, contact Karen at karen@seaside-realty.net or stop by Seaside Realty. We will also bring them to the Open House on Friday.

If you have a used paddle you’d like to sell, bring it along on Friday … someone may be in the market.

Scott will run a 3-day Intermediate and Advanced level player Boot Camp from January 8 – 10, 2018. There were 20 spots available, for players at 3.5 – 5.0 level. There are only a couple spots left.

Cost: $395 USD per person (Welcome dinner, and 1 working lunch included). You will also either need to be a member of Mirador Courts or purchase a day pass for each day of the boot camp.

Goal: Step up your game with intensive, semi-private training for 5 – 6 hours per day, focusing on every aspect of the game, guaranteed to improve your strategy, technique and understanding of the game with IPTPA certified instructor, Scott Moore. Together with a small group of other players, you will improve your mental game, shot making, shot selection, and learn new strategies and ways to become a better pickleball player, while implementing our 10 key principles of the game.

Mirador Courts: 6 New Pickleball Courts – Update

Progress continues on the 6 new pickleball courts at El Mirador. The San Carlos Pickleball Association is working with local developer Octavio Llano and his manager Javier Lujan to convert the existing 2 tennis courts into 6 newly refurbished pickleball courts. Mr. Llano is generously covering the expenses of refurbishing and painting the surface of the courts and fencing around and between them.

The courts will be run by the San Carlos Pickleball Association and will be available for use by the community — for pickleballers of all levels. Yearly membership at the new Mirador Courts will be available starting in October, 2017 for a nominal fee (memberships and play may begin once the courts are ready, for those here over the summer).

Progress to date:

• The perimeter fencing is fixed.
• The posts for the fencing in between the courts is installed.
• The sleeves for the net posts are installed.
• Repairing the surface of the courts continues and should be completed next week. Then the repainting can begin.

• Bonifacio’s Restaurant is now open beside the courts. They have done a beautiful job remodeling the building, fixing the pool, and landscaping around the pool and restaurant.
• San Carlos Pickleball Association Board Member, Darren Thompson, is organizing a summer Ladder League. See details below.
• As soon as the courts are finished, we’ll either put on a Sizzlin’ Summer Round Robin Tournament or have a “Soft Launch Open Play” evening with cocktails and food at Bonifacio’s afterwards. Stay tuned for details.
• 5.0 Pro Pickleballer, Scott Moore, has agreed to put on a Pickleball Boot Camp at Mirador Courts in San Carlos in January, 2018, See details below.
• The Boot Camp will take place right before the International Pickleball Tournament from Thursday, January 11 to Monday, January 15, 2018. Details to follow.

There is no cost except for whatever fee you would normally pay to play at the venue (for instance, gym fees to use the court).

If you are interested in playing in this league during the summer, please send Darren your phone number and your level of play (i.e. 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, etc — self-ranking is fine) so he can add this to the program. Once the schedule is sent out for the week, each 4-some will need to contact each other to determine location and time of the match. There will be 1 ladder match per week. You don’t have to be here every week to play.

Once the Mirador Courts are built, we will offer many benefits to paid members, including a Ladder League.
