Pickleball Newsletter: March 2024
Hola San Carlos Pickleballers,
We hope you’re all having a fantastic time on and off the courts! As some of our members are heading north again, we want to remind everyone that the pickleball fun in San Carlos Pickleball Club doesn’t stop here. We’ve got plenty of exciting activities, tournaments, drill sessions, open play and workshops lined up to keep the spirit of pickleball alive before the winter season ends.
While we are missing those who are embarking on journey home, we’re excited to continue building connections and community with all of you who are still here. Spring is around the block and we are already feeling the warm weather coming to San Carlos.
See you on the courts! San Carlos Pickleball Club
Construction Update from the President
We want to provide you with an update regarding the ongoing bathroom construction project. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the construction has taken longer than initially anticipated. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We are working diligently to expedite the completion of the project and have taken necessary measures to minimize any further delays. Your comfort and convenience are our top priorities, and we appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.
In other news, we’re excited to announce the installation of new shade structures in the middle area of our club! These shade structures will provide much-needed relief from the sun during morning open play and daytime tournaments. Thank you to Shade Eco for their in-kind donation and Scott Buntenbah for his work on the shade poles.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation as we strive to enhance your experience at the San Carlos Pickleball Club.

Member Spotlight:
Jeff is originally from Philadelphia. He started playing pickleball 12 years ago in Colorado. He moved to Tucson and started spending winters in San Carlos for the past 8 years.
Jeff enjoys how Pickleball has grown in San Carlos and all over Mexico.
What are you working on to improve your game right now?
I have been working on a few things to improve my game: lessons with Kevin have definitely helped a lot. He is an excellent teacher and we are lucky to have him. We have worked on midcourt and baseline resets and drops. I have been working on topspin drops. I also go to the gym and I have added spin class as well. My goal for pickleball, most importantly, is to continue to have fun playing and hopefully to improve.

Round Robin Sportsmanship Award
We are excited to announce the Sportsmanship Award for our weekly Tuesday Round Robins. This special recognition is dedicated to celebrating the spirit of fair play and performance demonstrated by our members on the court.
For the last few Round Robins, the Sportsmanship Award went to Daryl Egan, Cara Ross, Scott Donaldson and Jamie Manzanares. Congratulations!
Member Spotlight: Theresa Melius
T, as we call her, has the best of both worlds: in the summer she lives in beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado and in the fall and winter, she comes to San Carlos. She has lived here for over 16 years.
Theresa has played pickleball for over 14 years in both places, but she really got back into playing while in San Carlos. For T, pickleball holds a special place in her heart because through this sport, she has gained many new friends, and it is what makes this sport so great!
What are you working on to improve your game right now?
Improvement for me as a senior player is to stay competitive and work on my soft game. I enjoy mixing up shots but hitting the hard ball when necessary. For me, just getting out and playing is what I enjoy the most.

Construction Update from the President
We’re excited to share an update on the ongoing bathroom construction at our San Carlos Pickleball Club. The much-anticipated facilities are progressing smoothly, and we’re delighted to announce that the bathrooms will be ready soon — with a completion date estimated to be February, 2024! We appreciate your patience and understanding during this construction phase.
With the road to the front entry of the courts being paved (which will be great when it is done), we suggest you use caution when driving here – it is probably safest to avoid this road now. Take the turn before Luis Boat Shop and park along the back or side of the courts until the paving is completed, which should be another month. If you have any suggestions, please let us know.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Round Robin Sportsmanship Award
We are excited to announce the Sportsmanship Award for our weekly Tuesday Round Robins. This special recognition is dedicated to celebrating the spirit of fair play, camaraderie, and a positive attitude demonstrated by our members on and off the court.
For the last few Round Robins, the Sportsmanship Award went to Lisa Watts, Mark Schlüter, Tania Quiñones (second time here) and Mary Spalding. Congratulations!
Member Spotlight: Michelle Diehl
Michelle Diehl is from Colorado, has played Pickleball for 10 years, and moved to San Carlos 5 years ago, where she is a full time resident. She likes to visit her kids in the summer.
Michelle and Norbert moved to San Carlos because of the pickleball scene, the mountains and the sea. They were also looking for Golf but that didn’t worked out well.
What are you working on to improve your game right now?
I am working on slowing my game and waiting for the right shot to put away. I am mostly focused on resetting the ball – longer points and less errors. Getting to the kitchen quickly is a must – Norbert is always in my subconscious to hurry to the line after I hit. Don’t wait. I am trying to learn new serves and think about my shot selection instead of just hitting the ball back without purpose. I have enjoyed lessons with Kevin and others.

Before I start a game I like to do some stretches and then I like to warm up on the court by practicing a little dinking, drop shots and serves.
How are you training for the November Tournament?
I will be part of one of the teams in the Open Division so I am training at least 4 days a week to improve my level of play and be ready for a great competition since some of the best players from Mexico and the USA will be here.
I’m also combining my regular weight training at the gym with circuits to improve my performance on the courts.

About the game styles at our next Big Tournament: The Latin American Pickleball Games 2023 presented by DUPR
First things first. DUPR is a rating system that can be used by anyone, from novice players to professionals. It stands for “Dynamic Universal Pickleball Ratings” and is commonly referred to as the most inclusive and accurate rating system in pickleball.
Now, many of you have asked about the style games in our next Big November Tournament, that we believe will be the biggest Pickleball Event in Mexico this year!
The Latin American Pickleball Games is co-presented by DUPR and hosted by San Carlos Pickleball Club. This premier event will be attended by teams from all over Mexico and the United States, is comprised of two separate tournaments over the course of 3 days.
Friday, November 10
Friday will bring a men’s and a women’s Waterfall style tournament in which partners compete against others in a 4 hour, 4 match event organized by skill level.
A DUPR Waterfall Style tournament is essentially just another name for a Compass Draw Tournament and features a format that guarantees players four (4) competitive games all within a four-hour period, or tee-time.
Please watch this short video for an easy explanation of a DUPR Waterfall Tournament. Click here to watch the video.
Saturday and Sunday (November 11 and 12)
Saturday and Sunday will boast a team-style event called Minor League Pickleball. Minor League Pickleball is an innovative team competition where teams of four players (2 women and 2 men) compete against other teams in a novel and engaging format as described below:
Teams compete against another team in a Match. A Match consists of four Games.
Game 1: Women’s Doubles
Game 2: Men’s Doubles
Game 3: Mixed Doubles
Game 4: Mixed Doubles
If teams are tied after these four games, an innovative tiebreaker known as the “DreamBreaker™” (to 21) is played, with a rotational system involving all four players.
All games are rally scoring to 21. All games must be won on-serve.
This tournament is open for skill levels:
Open (5.0+)
Advanced (4.0 – 4.9)
High Intermediate (3.5 – 3.9)
Intermediate (3.0 – 3.4)
Novice (2.5 – 2.9)
Sign up with your team of 4 (2 men & 2 women). If you would like to play, but need help finding a team or if you need help finding more people for your team, let us know and we’ll work with you.
If you have more questions about this tournament or need help with your team, please reach out to Ryan at sancarlosryan@gmail.com or Darren at darrensancarlos@gmail.com

What Happened in July?
Construction update from President: Render Reveal
Our dreams are coming true! I am happy to share with our community some renderings of The San Carlos Pickleball Club! Our dreams are no longer just in our minds, they are real! It is hard to not get emotional about our accomplishments and what has yet to be accomplished. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making the magic happen; our Board, the Management Team, so many volunteers, our generous members, the Community of San Carlos and the businesses that knew that dreams are possible if we work together.
I look forward to seeing many of you this summer playing at night under the lights and the rest of you this season! We will keep sharing our progress so you can be excited and ready to come back to your HOME COURTS!
Carlos Dessens, President, San Carlos Pickleball Club
Summer Camp
43 kids from the Castaway Kids (Mexican non-profit) and the La Manga community had the opportunity to join our Pickleball Summer Camp! This was posible with donations from our amazing San Carlos Pickleball Community!
There is no doubt that together we can do great things for our community and we are proud that our club members are very generous! A warm thank you to everyone who made the summer camp a success for the kids: the coaches, the club members who sponsored the kids’ participation, volunteers, Lisa (From Sunset Grill) and Tom (from Marvida) that provided us with a Van to move the kids from La Manga to our courts every week.
Haboob
There was more action than usual at the courts when the haboob hit us in the middle of a summer camp session! We got to experience our beautiful team spirit in action when club members helped pack up the courts, provided a safe place for the kids, and cleaned up the courts the following day. Thank you for your help everyone!

What’s Going On!
More Court Lights
We are fortunate in that even during our “slow season” our available courts are typically at capacity. Due to budgetary restraints, we initially lit up only four courts. That has proven to not be sufficient and the community not only took notice but took action.
Kicked off by Terry & Angie Parmely, and quickly matched by Ace & Amber Bollinger, Mike Haynes, Antonio & Barb Curiel, Kevin & Choclo Duff and our President Carlos Dessens & First Lady Tammi Miller the club received $8,500 in donations towards lights in a SINGLE DAY and is 50% of the TOTAL needed to light every single court!
Additionally, thank you to Karen Stewart & Ron Halverson, Kelly & Scott Buntenbah, and First Step Home Group, for their contributions and support which significantly lowered the price of materials and installation.
A major thank you to all of our lighting donors!
We are half way, we are asking our generous community to help chip in to finish the installation of the 14 courts. If you’d like to claim a charitable donation on your US taxes you can send your donation via check or Zelle to the San Carlos Pickleball Association, an approved 501c3 in the United States.
Contact Ryan K. at sancarlosryan@gmail.com for more information. No donation is too small! It takes a village!

What are you working on improving for your game right now?
I am actively working on placing my shots and serves with intention. This means dinks, drives, and blocks. It is always a work in progress because I am also trying to improve my accuracy.
How do you prepare for a game?
Being a retired Health Coach, I take preparation very seriously. I drink 120 oz (or more) of water each day, not including what I bring to the courts.
I eat whole food complex carbohydrates and varied protein to fuel my energy and muscles, and I heavily stretch before and after every game. Preparation for every game is the key to remaining healthy during and after the game, plus reduce the chance of injury.
What hack has been most helpful for your game?
Honestly I do not use a “hack,” but I do use meditation and mantras to get me through the games. I try to meditate on my shots before every game to mentally prepare for what I will face. During a mistake or missed shot, I instantly relive the shot and correctly go through the motion to help set the muscle memory physically. I tell myself “Breathe, Slow and Steady, and Focus.” This helps me stay in the moment and actively work on what I need to improve on.
Pro-shop
Finally we have a Pickleball Pro-shop in San Carlos. Be part of our thriving pickleball family wearing your Club t-shirt or hat.
We are located inside First Step Home Concept Store in Seaside Plaza.
See you on the court!
Fitness Hack: Electrolytes
Hydration is critical to optimize performance when playing pickleball, especially during the hot summer months when we sweat more. We asked our club member Alexia Bjarkan, health coach with clinical experience, how to best hydrate to ace your game!
“I recommend taking electrolytes, but watch out for unhealthy ingredients”, Alexia says. “I use a package of LMNT, a high-quality electrolyte, for each session on the courts. I also start every morning by drinking a glass of water mixed with a teaspoon of Solspring salt. Himalayan salt can work too, although the quality can vary.”
We continue to build the greatest pickleball community in Latin America, and thank you for your contributions to making it happen!

Tuesday Round Robin with Kevin
Tuesday afternoon Ratings Round Robin with Kevin at The Club. The Round Robin that fills in minutes! Don’t hesitate to join. It’s open to all San Carlos Pickleball Club members. The 100 pesos fee supports the San Carlos Pickleball Club. It’s a rotating partner skill level round robin every Tuesday at 3:30pm (arrive 15 minutes early to check in and warm up).
Players interested in participating in the Tuesday Round Robin should join this WhatsApp group for more information and for registration instructions.
Sunday Round Robin
The Sunday Round Robin run by Art Linblad is the best way to spend a Sunday morning. The round robin starts at 8:30am at the Club Courts. It’s open (no ratings) play, open to the first 40 to show up before 8:20am.
The Sunday Round Robin is open to all San Carlos Pickleball Members at no extra cost.
After 8:20am, any late comers will be able to join only IF there are fewer than 40 prompt picklers AND if the tardy pickler eliminates the need for byes. In all fairness to those that arrive on time, that would apply only in the circumstance that fewer than 28 people arrive on time. For example, if there happens to be 39 prompt picklers and one tardy pickler, that person could join the rotation. If, on the other hand, there are 39 prompt picklers and 2 tardy picklers, only one of the 2 could join the rotation.
Some Sunday RR ETIQUETTE: Perhaps you’ve noticed that some picklers are a little sensitive, so to avoid any conflict/issues: FIRST: Numbers for play will only be given to each individual player as they present themselves, that is, Olive won’t be able to say Brutus is on the way, can I get his number; SECOND, there will typically be eight 12 minute games, please commit to playing them all, especially if we have a multiple of 4 registered (ie, 4, 8, 12…28, 32, 36…and so on) and no byes available to take your place. Any injured player might be granted a modicum of compassion; THREE, once you reach your assigned court, players may decide to switch up partners if it seems teams are too mismatched, but all 4 players have to be in agreement and realize later you may end up with that partner again. PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS ALL ABOUT HAVING FUN
Evening Play & Social
Our beautiful 14 courts are almost ready — in the mean time, the club has a nice surprise for all our members: “OPEN PLAY AFTER SUNSET”. Monday – Sunday, Sunset -10:00pm (all levels).

Grandes Niños de Pickleball
The first Lesson for our Grandes Niños de Pickleball in la Manga was a great success. And the kids loved playing at the new courts this weekend.
Thanks to the San Carlos Pickleball Club’s scholarship program, we’re helping teach the next generation of pickleball fanatics and giving back to the community. Thank you to everyone who bought the kids tennis shoes at Christmas and who donated paddles, funds and their time.
We’ll also be starting a program for the kids at the school in the Ranchitos.
New Court Construction Update
All 14 courts will be complete and ready to play on for the Grand Opening Tournament. The center area will also be ready to use and we’ll access the courts from their proper entry ways.
We’re sourcing quotes (and funding) for the front buildings and will start on the bathroom portion as soon as we can. We also hope to install shade structures down the center before the summer heat is here.
We have 2 courts lit and are working to get more.

Please Help Make the Dream a Reality
The new 14 court facility is a great Community Project and something that San Carlos can be proud of. It will be a place for exercise, fun and friendship and a community hub.
Please get in touch with me (Christa Thomas) at: christa@whatsupsancarlos.com if you would like to donate. We have several court sponsorships and commemorative bricks of various levels that recognize the donations that went above and beyond to make this project a success. You can have your name or business name on a court or on the sponsors’ wall. You can read more about it on our website.
Please consider buying a brick. Bricks will be prominently featured on a beautiful focal accent wall just inside the court entrance / exit. The following levels are available:
- $5000 USD or more (100,000 pesos) Diamond
- $2500 USD or more (50,000 pesos) Platinum
- $1000 USD (20,000 pesos) Gold
- $500 USD (10,000 pesos) Silver
- $250 USD (5,000 pesos) Bronze
You can also donate through our GoFundMe campaign. Every little bit helps. Thank you in advance.

Round Robins
Tuesday Round Robin
Tuesday afternoon Round Robin with Kevin. Back by popular demand — the Round Robin that fills in minutes! Don’t hesitate to Join.
WHAT: rotating partner skill level round robin
WHEN: every Tuesday at 3:00pm (arrive 15 minutes early to check in and warm up)
WHERE: Ranchitos courts
WHO: open to all San Carlos Pickleball Club members
COST: 100 pesos to support the San Carlos Pickleball Club and to compensate the organizer
Players interested in participating in the Tuesday Round Robin should join this WhatsApp group for more information and for registration instructions.
Sunday Round Robin
The Sunday Round Robin has returned! Thank you Art Linblad. It’s the best way to spend a Sunday morning.
The round robin starts at 8:30am at Ranchitos Courts. It’s open (no ratings) play, open to the first 35 to show up before 8:20am.
The Sunday Round Robin is open to all San Carlos Pickleball Members at no extra cost.
After 8:20am, any late comers will be able to join only IF there are fewer than 28 prompt picklers AND if the tardy pickler eliminates the need for byes. In all fairness to those that arrive on time, that would apply only in the circumstance that fewer than 28 people arrive on time. For example, if there happens to be 27 prompt picklers and one tardy pickler, that person could join the rotation. If, on the other hand, there are 27 prompt picklers and 2 tardy picklers, only one of the 2 could join the rotation.

Mark your Calendars! We’ll have a lot more information on these 3 tournaments soon, but for now, save the dates and find your partner(s) for the Grand Opening Tournament.

You will play a minimum of 4 games in this format.
When: Tuesday, February 14 at the Ranchitos Courts. Check-in will begin at 8:15am and play begins at 9:00am.
Sign Up: Please email T at theresamelius23@gmail.com. In the email, list your full name, a phone number and your email address and what you think your skill level is. We would encourage all levels of players to join in for a fun day on the courts. We are looking at levels of 3.0-3.49; 3.5-3.99; 4.0-4.5+

Changing of the Guard
The Board would like to wish James Main and his wife Kim all the best on their next adventure and thank James for all that he has done for pickleball in San Carlos. As you can see from James’ note below, he has resigned as President of the club. Until our next annual Board meeting in January, Carlos Dessens will be interim President and Christa Thomas will be Vice President.
What a ride ~ by James….
As many of you heard, Kim and I will be spending far less time in San Carlos. Because of that, I feel it would be unfair to the Pickleball community to continue on as President.
I wanted to take the time to thank the Pickleball community for everything. It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of the growth of the sport here in San Carlos and I hope that my minimal contribution had a positive impact on the community, the sport itself, or your own personal journey. In trying to author this little note, I wanted to find a picture that would help sum up the past 5 years for me here in San Carlos. I couldn’t find just one….
When I first started with the board, I was tasked with bringing pros down to do clinics. Scott Moore was a frequent visitor to San Carlos, but it was time to introduce some new pros to the area as well. This photo always makes me laugh. Scott Crandall was supposed to be joined by Jessie Irvine for a week long clinic session. She forgot to check her passport expiration date and was turned away at the airport. Scott and I made the best of it. The Bacanora that Steve and Hillary gave him later that evening made everything better!
Helle Sparre has come to town several times with her Dynamite Doubles technique.
Ben Johns and Christine McGrath came down for Pickleball and Tetakawi. Ben made the climb to the top look about as easy as his backhand roll shot.
Coach David Alexander was fun to entertain. He loved the tacos and Daquiris at Hammerheads after playing more than I think he liked the playing.
Takako Tourangeau is always ear to ear smiles!
Irina Tereschenko loves San Carlos. After a long day of kiteboarding, Sunset Grill at sunset hits the spot.
First time playing in San Carlos. Mirador wasn’t open yet so we played on the one court at the Old San Carlos Gym. It was August! Hot hot hot. Thank god the pool was right there.
I spent a lot of time my first year in San Carlos here at Art’s house. A lot of good times and tequila were had. What great times and memories!!!
A couple of years ago, Pickleball in San Carlos started to experience a boom. The Las Tinajas crew and others started expanding and Pickleball became an addiction to an entirely new group of people. Time to start looking for new courts!
Skills and Drills as well as private lessons were always fun. Skills and Drills brought out the crowds and the popular phrases: Stroke it, Don’t Poke it; Down the Middle Solves the Riddle… Until it Doesn’t; Close the Backdoor, etc.
There are so many more pictures and memories that could be shared but I’ve already taken up too much time. Time to get back to the courts. A new chapter in San Carlos Pickleball is about to begin.
New Court Construction Update
On December 9, we opened the first 7 courts and we’ve been happily playing on them since. I’d be surprised if there are courts that have a better sunset than ours.
The court building crew arrived from Mexico City and started on the next 7 courts in mid December.
We received the architect’s plans and will get quotes for the center area and hopefully start work on it in January.
